Scofield is an Investment Professional in the Public Equities Department. Based in the Shanghai office, he is responsible for equity investments in the China market as well as the broader Asia technology sector. In this role, he analyses market trends, identifies promising opportunities, and helps shape investment strategies that drive long-term value for GIC’s portfolio. He also manages external relationships with local regulators and corporates, and mentors younger members of the team.
Outside of work, he is an avid snowboarder who spends his winter holidays chasing fresh powder across different mountains—a welcome escape that allows him to fully immerse himself in the thrill of the slopes, away from the fast-paced world of the stock market. A devoted Real Madrid fan for over 20 years, he enjoys catching La Liga matches on weekend nights.
Why did you decide to join GIC?
Before joining GIC, I was working as an Equity Research analyst and had frequent interactions with GIC professionals. I was always impressed by how smart, humble, and approachable they were. It was clear that they enjoyed their work and had achieved a good work-life balance.
At that stage in my career, I was passionate about investing and open to exploring buyside opportunities while I was still young. When GIC began expanding its China team, I was fortunate to interview with a hiring manager who genuinely embodied the values I admired. He spoke candidly about the open culture, collaborative environment, and the wealth of resources available at GIC. His authenticity and genuine enthusiasm left a lasting impression on me.
After joining, I found that the experience exceeded my expectations. The culture, the people, and the opportunities for growth were even better than I had imagined.
What does your typical workday look like?
My day usually starts with catching up on overnight news and emails before the market opens, which is crucial for forming trade ideas and staying ahead of market movements. I closely monitor our portfolio and stay in constant communication with my team members in both the Shanghai and Singapore offices throughout the day. The rest of my schedule is filled with meetings and calls, collaborating on strategies and sharing insights.
A significant part of my role also involves attending conferences and meeting with senior management from corporations and industry contacts. These interactions are vital for gaining market insights and understanding expectations, and they often take me across China, Asia, and even the US. The dynamic nature of my work keeps every day interesting and full of learning opportunities.
What do you like most about working here?
What I appreciate most about working at GIC is the opportunity to collaborate with some of the best talents from diverse backgrounds. I also value the unique access we have to C-level management of top listed companies and financial institutions, which accelerates my learning and broadens my perspective.
One of the things that stood out to me when I first joined was that everyone had a voice at the table, regardless of seniority. Different viewpoints are not only welcomed but encouraged, which creates a vibrant and intellectually stimulating atmosphere. My investment philosophy is tested by the market every day, and I have a great team that I can count on and access to GIC’s extensive resources to help me continuously improve. This fast feedback loop keeps me enthusiastic and motivated.
How would you describe the learning & development culture at GIC?
I have been at GIC for seven years, and my learning curve remains as steep as it was in my first year—if not steeper, as the scope of my responsibilities has grown. GIC’s open and encouraging culture constantly presents new challenges at every stage of my career, whether it’s refining my investment framework, developing people skills, or adapting to organizational changes. There is always something new to learn, and the environment here supports continuous growth.
What skills or knowledge have you developed while working at GIC?
The most important skill I have developed — and continue to develop — at GIC is the ability to stay curious and open-minded. The world is changing rapidly, and working alongside some of the brightest minds in the industry has shown me just how much there is to learn if you keep your eyes and mind open.
In addition, I have cultivated a habit of pursuing excellence. I’ve learned that it’s often that one extra step, that additional effort, which makes all the difference in performance and outcomes.
What are some highlights in your career thus far?
One of the highlights of my career at GIC has been the trust and empowerment I received early on. As an Associate and AVP, I was given the responsibility to lead several hundred-million-dollar IPO deals and block trades—opportunities that are rare to find outside of GIC. These experiences were instrumental in my career development, and I’m grateful that the deals turned out to be successful, delivering strong returns for the team.
