Esi

Esi is currently serving as an Assistant Vice President in GIC’s Private Equity Department, based in the London office. She is a valuable member of the recently established Sustainability Solutions Group (SSG), where she focuses on growth equity investments with a focus on sustainability. Before joining SSG, Esi worked in the Direct Investments Group, concentrating on Industrial and Consumer investments.

Outside of work, Esi enjoys skiing and spending time with her friends. She even combines the two activities on occasion!

Why did you decide to join GIC?

Before joining GIC, I worked as an investment banker, specializing in the UK Industrial sector. At that time, I had little knowledge of GIC and its operations. Fortunately, a friend of mine who worked in the Direct Investment team introduced me to GIC’s unique investment proposition, which includes fund, co-investment, and direct transactions.

My friend also highlighted the positive culture at GIC, and I was excited to work with intelligent and humble individuals.

Now that I have been with the company for some time, I can attest that my friend’s words were true. The people at GIC are what make it exceptional, with a keen sense of teamwork and collaboration across different asset classes.

What does your typical workday look like?

Typically, I like to start my day with a morning session of reformer Pilates or Barrecore, followed by a walk through the park before heading to work. My workdays are quite diverse, and I am involved in portfolio management work, execution of live deals, and sourcing of potential investments.

To evaluate potential new investments, I conduct meetings with management, review company documents, and have discussions with advisors and other investment firms. During the in-depth due diligence process for an active deal, my schedule is packed with diligence calls and preparing materials for our investment committee.

Despite the busy schedule, I find my work at GIC to be both challenging and rewarding. The opportunity to work with a talented team of professionals and make a meaningful impact on the company’s investment portfolio is truly fulfilling.

What do you like most about working here?

Working with my colleagues at GIC is one of the highlights of my job. I take pleasure in collaborating with them and sharing knowledge and ideas over lunch.

One of the things I appreciate most about working at GIC is the level of independence I have. Even early in my career, I have been given the opportunity to take ownership of workstreams and topics, which has given me a greater sense of empowerment and responsibility.

The high volume of deals we encounter is quite exhilarating. It keeps me on my toes and challenges me to constantly learn and grow as an investment professional. Overall, I feel fortunate to be a part of such a dynamic and stimulating work environment at GIC.

How would you describe the learning & development culture at GIC?

During my time at GIC, I have gained a wealth of knowledge and experience that has been invaluable to my growth as an investment professional. Through my involvement in several deals across the investment groups, I have been exposed to various sectors and workstreams, which has broadened my perspective and deepened my understanding of the investment landscape.

I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to present, establish connections, and refine my investment skills. These experiences have helped me develop my technical abilities and my interpersonal skills, essential to building strong relationships with colleagues, clients, and partners.

Overall, I feel fortunate to have had the chance to work at GIC and to be a part of such a dynamic and stimulating work environment. I look forward to continuing to learn and grow as an investment professional with the support of my colleagues and the resources of the company.

What you should know before joining GIC

My advice to anyone considering a career at GIC is to always be true to yourself and remain honest. In my experience, individuals who possess a sincere interest in investing, thrive in a team environment, and have an ardent desire for ongoing learning tend to excel at GIC.

It is important to be passionate about what you do and to have a strong work ethic, as the investment landscape is constantly evolving and requires a high level of dedication and commitment. Additionally, being a team player is essential, as collaboration and communication are key to success in the investment industry.

Finally, a willingness to learn and adapt is crucial, as the investment landscape is always changing and requires individuals who are open to new ideas and approaches. With these qualities, I believe anyone can thrive at GIC and make a meaningful impact on the company’s investment portfolio.
