Why did you decide to join GIC?
I have been working in Japan since 2007 first as a diplomat and later as a real estate professional. I did not think twice when offered the opportunity to join GIC. GIC is a top global institutional investor that strives to secure the financial future of Singapore. As a Singaporean, working in GIC allows me to contribute to nation building in my professional capacity. As a major overseas investor, GIC also contributes to the economic and financial development of the Japan market.
What does your typical workday look like?
I typically start my day catching up with e-mails from the previous night, as well as going through the latest market developments via newspapers and industry reports. The rest of the day would usually be filled with meetings with internal and external parties to discuss various matters such as work strategy formulation, team management, asset management of existing assets and new investments. I will also set aside some days to have lunch/dinner with my business partners. On days without working dinner, I would return home early to eat with my family.
What do you like most about working here?
I enjoy contributing to nation building through my work at GIC, a leading global investor with a long-term investment perspective. This provides a conducive investment environment where we are not swayed by near-term market volatility but can focus on longer-term returns including taking advantage of potential short-term market dislocation.
GIC’s significant market presence also provides great access to deals. I have been able to significantly grow GIC’s exposure to industrial real estate by leveraging the firm’s credibility and agile decision-making process. Our strong collaborations with local partners position us well to ride on Japan’s ongoing wave of growth in industrial real estate while enhancing returns through active asset management.
How would you describe the learning & development culture at GIC?
As a top-tier global investor, GIC provides access to a wealth of reading and learning materials across different markets and asset classes. This enhances our investment acumen and ability to understand Japan real estate against a global backdrop.
In addition, the staff quality at GIC is exceptional. Despite everyone’s stellar professional record and expertise, team members are humble, helpful, and inspire each other to push for greater heights. I am fortunate to be surrounded by colleagues who strive to do their best and go the extra mile.
What you should know before joining GIC
GIC provides a great environment to develop one’s professional career. Every single day is exciting and challenging professionally. A talented and driven individual who can leverage the dynamic environment to grow would thrive.
