Marta is a Senior Vice President in the Investment Services Public Markets Department. Based in the New York office, she is part of the operational due diligence team, where she conducts operational risk assessments of various investment vehicles managed by external asset managers. Her primary focus is to ensure that the operational setup is robust enough to protect GIC’s investments.
Outside of work, Marta is usually outdoors with her kids or deep into planning their next adventure. She firmly believes that life is better when there’s always a trip on the calendar.
Why did you decide to join GIC?
Before joining, my impression of GIC was shaped by the rigorous and thoughtful interview process. I anticipated that same level of energy, commitment, and high standards would be reflected in the day-to-day work, and that excited me.
What truly sparked my interest was the opportunity to be part of a team managing the financial reserves for the entire country of Singapore. The idea that my work could have a positive, lasting impact on generations of Singaporeans was incredibly motivating. I’ve always admired Singapore’s remarkable growth story, and joining GIC felt like a unique chance to contribute to that legacy in a meaningful way.
Initially, I was a bit intimidated by the impressive backgrounds and expertise of my future colleagues. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how approachable, friendly, and genuinely supportive everyone is. Despite being a high-performing environment, GIC is also welcoming and collaborative, which made the transition much smoother.
What does your typical workday look like?
No two days are ever quite the same for me, which is something I truly enjoy. My typical workday is a blend of deal work, collaborating with different teams, and tackling a variety of ad hoc projects. These can range from implementing new tech solutions, enhancing various internal frameworks to participating in firm-wide initiatives, such as organizing charity events or representing GIC in external organisations. This diversity keeps my role dynamic and engaging, and I appreciate the constant opportunities to learn and contribute beyond my core responsibilities.
What do you like most about working here?
People! I’m surrounded by colleagues who are not only highly motivated and talented, but also genuinely happy to be here. This creates a positive and supportive atmosphere where everyone is willing to help each other and work towards shared goals.
What keeps me going is being part of an organisation that truly thinks long-term. We’re not just focused on the next quarter, but on the five- and ten-year objectives, which gives our work a real sense of purpose. It’s also inspiring to be in an environment where integrity and a strong sense of mission are at the core of everything we do. Additionally, GIC’s commitment to developing its employees means that growth here is more than just business results—it’s about investing in people and their potential.
How would you describe the learning & development culture at GIC?
Learning at GIC is continuous and deeply embedded in the culture. We have access to mentorship programs, regular learning opportunities through the GIC School, and are encouraged to pursue additional development courses on a regular basis. As one of the largest allocators globally, we are also invited to key industry events, which keeps us connected to the broader investment community and ensures we are always learning from the latest trends. This commitment to ongoing development has been instrumental in my professional growth.
What skills or knowledge have you developed while working at GIC?
One of the biggest areas of growth for me at GIC has been developing the ability to assess operational risk from multiple perspectives. I’ve worked on a range of unique and complex deals, which required close collaboration with both internal teams and external partners. These experiences have sharpened my ability to identify potential issues early, understand our risk tolerance, and develop thoughtful, well-rounded approaches to risk management.
What are some highlights in your career thus far?
A recent highlight has been leading a major initiative to leverage GIC’s enterprise AI solutions to streamline our processes and strengthen our focus on risk management. This long-term project is transforming the way we work by automating time-consuming tasks and integrating advanced technology into our workflows. It’s exciting to be at the forefront of innovation in our field and to know that these efforts will make us more efficient and effective in safeguarding GIC’s investments.
What you should know before joining GIC
I would encourage anyone considering GIC to view this not just as a job, but as a long-term career. The environment can feel intense or intimidating at first, but don’t let that deter you.
