Benjamin

Assistant Vice President

External Managers Department

Benjamin

Benjamin is an Assistant Vice President in the Credit team within GIC’s External Managers Department. With a focus on credit instruments, he plays a crucial role in identifying the most promising investment opportunities and refining GIC’s portfolio.

Outside of work, Benjamin’s family takes up the rest of his waking hours, especially with two kids under three. He is also actively working towards another goal – running 5km in under 20 minutes.

Why did you decide to join GIC?

My decision boiled down to two main reasons: 1) Being part of a higher purpose, and 2) Continuous learning. As Singaporeans, my family and I have benefited from the country’s economic stability and growth. Few roles can rival the responsibility and honor of being a trusted steward of national wealth. Given GIC’s extensive global reach and diverse investments across various asset classes, I was confident that a role at GIC would offer unparalleled opportunities to master the intricacies of the financial world.

What does your typical workday look like?

My day starts with quick cuddles with my kids before diving into work. Since my managers are primarily based in the US, I begin by catching up on overnight market developments and exchanging insights with my US counterparts. Mornings are packed with calls to stay informed about market trends, identify new opportunities, and recognize potential portfolio pitfalls. The rest of the day is more flexible, involving tasks like preparing for new fund investments, monitoring fund performances, and collaborating with internal teams on complex fund structuring or legal issues.

What do you like most about working here?

My role provides invaluable access to learning from the best minds in the industry. When tackling new market opportunities, we have a front-row seat to various managers’ approaches and rationales, which helps us formulate a comprehensive course of action. Our team is not limited to a single type of credit instrument and can adapt the portfolio based on where the best opportunities are at any given time. This flexibility also enhances the team’s understanding of the latest innovations in the industry.

How would you describe the learning & development culture at GIC?

I joined my team at a time when we were ramping up deployment, providing many opportunities to hone my skills. As I was new to the allocator role, I aimed to make improvements, no matter how small, with each iteration. I have been fortunate to have a nurturing line manager and an inclusive team who have been generous in sharing their knowledge and pointing me in the right direction. We often compare the information flow in the department to drinking from a fire hydrant, so it is crucial to stay focused. If one is willing, there will never be a day without learning.
