Alexandra

Vice President

Portfolio Execution Group

Alexandra

Alexandra is a Vice President from the Portfolio Execution Group. Her primary focus is on equities and options trading, with additional experience trading a wide range of asset classes and products, which has enabled her to develop a broader perspective and hone her skills. This cross-functional exposure has been a critical part of her developing a deep understanding of the market.  The unique trades that she has been responsible for have challenged her to think creatively and strategically and have provided valuable learning opportunities. Finally, regular collaboration with colleagues and counterparts from different teams and departments has deepened her network and her understanding of GIC as an organization.

Outside of work she spends most of her time with her family. She has two children and loves spending time and exploring everything that NYC has to offer with them. Being able to balance work and family life is key, and she is grateful to have a supportive workplace that allows her to do so.

Why did you decide to join GIC?

Before joining GIC, I had limited knowledge about the organisation beyond its reputation as a large sovereign wealth fund with a strong presence in private investments. While I was aware of its high standing in the industry, I had never personally encountered anyone who worked there before.

After spending a decade on the sell side, I became increasingly interested in exploring opportunities on the buy side. I was drawn to the prospect of working more closely with long-term investors and contributing to investment decisions that could have a substantial impact on a portfolio. I also found myself wanting more control over my career and a greater degree of autonomy in my work. Joining the buy side offered me the chance to pursue these goals, while also providing exposure to a broader range of investment strategies and asset classes.

I was pleasantly surprised by the collaborative and welcoming nature of the team. In the finance industry, there is often a perception of cut-throat competition, but at GIC, everyone was hardworking and ambitious yet kind and supportive. My colleagues have always been willing to share their knowledge and expertise. We work together as a team, and success and failure are shared experiences. This culture of collaboration and teamwork has been a key factor for my happiness at GIC, as it has created a positive work environment where we can all thrive.

What does your typical workday look like?

Every day as an equities and options trader at GIC is different, and I usually start by reading the news to stay up to date on market developments. One of the things I enjoy most about my job is the opportunity to work on unique situations and solve problems in collaboration with my peers, brokers, and portfolio managers. The fast-paced and ever-changing nature of the markets requires us to be agile and adaptable, and to think creatively to deliver optimal outcomes for our clients. This requires effective communication and collaboration across teams, as well as a deep understanding of the markets and the factors that drive them.

What do you like most about working here?

I find it incredibly rewarding to work alongside such talented and creative individuals at GIC. The access to information and knowledge is unparalleled, and being part of a top institution means that I can easily connect with experts in any field. GIC is a dynamic organization that is always at the forefront of the industry, never shying away from change and growth. This culture of innovation and forward-thinking is what makes GIC such an exciting place to work, and I am proud to be part of an organisation that is constantly pushing boundaries and striving for excellence.

How would you describe the learning & development culture at GIC?

I appreciate the emphasis on continuous learning and development at GIC. With access to a vast network of resources and the expertise of our internal colleagues, I am constantly expanding my knowledge and skills. This culture of learning is crucial to our success as long-term global investors and gives us a competitive edge. As an organisation, GIC embraces change and prioritises agility and forward-thinking, which allows us to stay nimble and adapt to new challenges and opportunities.
