Ezekiel

Ezekiel began his journey with GIC as an intern in 2023, before transitioning to a full-time role in 2024. Today, he serves as a Data Engineer in the Data Cloud team within the Investment Cluster, part of the Data Strategy Group (DSG). He is responsible for maintaining data ingestion pipelines and managing the cloud data warehouse for downstream teams. His role also involves enhancing pipeline performance and leveraging various applications to address the impact of company-wide projects.

Outside of work, Ezekiel stays active by going to the gym on weekends. He is passionate about music – whether listening during his commute, while coding at work, or relaxing at home. Ezekiel also enjoys expressing his creativity through DIY projects, such as repurposing old items or woodworking. One of his recent creations was a shoe rack made from old wooden clothes hangers.

Why did you decide to join GIC?

Before joining, I didn’t know much about GIC. However, after doing some research, I realised the significant role GIC plays in safeguarding Singapore’s reserves and its far-reaching impact on the nation. Learning about GIC’s founding by Dr. Goh Keng Swee and the organisation’s noble mission inspired me to be part of a company with such a forward-looking purpose. Observing the importance of Singapore’s reserves, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, deepened my appreciation for GIC’s work.

After joining, I discovered the depth and breadth of GIC’s operations. From leveraging technology, to fostering strong relationships and making informed investment decisions, I saw first-hand how GIC operates as a sovereign wealth fund to grow and diversify Singapore’s reserves for the benefit of all Singaporeans.

What does your typical workday look like?

My workday starts early – I’m up by 6:30am and at the office by 8:30am. I begin by checking emails and monitoring data ingestion pipelines for any issues, quickly addressing any failures that arise.  My daily responsibilities encompass developing code, devising innovative solutions to technical challenges, and managing essential administrative tasks such as system testing and secure credentials administration. I usually have lunch with colleagues, which is a great time to unwind and connect. Throughout the day, I attend meetings related to ongoing projects and team updates, before wrapping up my tasks and heading home in the evening.

What do you like most about working here?

The most rewarding aspect of my work is the opportunity to engage in programming and problem-solving while contributing to GIC’s broader mission. I find a sense of accomplishment in knowing that my efforts, however small, help build Singapore’s reserves and contribute to the nation’s long-term stability. Being able to do work I enjoy every day, along with a strong sense of purpose, keeps me motivated and fulfilled.

How would you describe the learning & development culture at GIC?

I am a participant in the GIC Enable Programme (GEP), and I look back fondly on my internship experience. The GEP offers students with disabilities from Singapore universities internship placements across various departments, matched to their interests and fields of study, with the possibility of conversion to a full-time role. I believe that GIC offers abundant learning and development opportunities, and it’s up to each of us to take the initiative to make the most of them for personal and professional growth.

What skills or knowledge have you developed while working at GIC?

During my time at GIC, I honed both my technical and interpersonal skills. I have learned the importance of clear communication in aligning goals and expectations, which leads to more effective teamwork. My technical expertise has grown through exposure to industry best practices in programming and testing. I’ve greatly benefited from my colleagues’ guidance and support, which has accelerated my learning and helped me overcome challenges. Working with such experienced and collaborative teammates has expanded my skills and motivated me to keep improving.

What are some highlights in your career thus far?

As an intern, I was part of a team focused on developing solutions to improve database performance, where I helped create a centralised extraction layer. As a full-time staff member, I have worked on enhancing the security of over 50 data ingestion pipelines, analysing and addressing the impact of major company-wide initiatives, and integrating a cloud-based credentials management solution across all pipelines. These experiences have deepened my technical expertise and broadened my understanding of how technology supports GIC’s mission. Working with colleagues across teams has strengthened my communication and problem-solving skills, while overcoming challenges has made me more adaptable and resilient. Each project has contributed to my growth as both an engineer and a member of a purpose-driven organisation.

What you should know before joining GIC

My advice to future applicants is to not limit yourself or feel intimidated by the prospect of joining GIC. Everyone brings something unique to the table, and in a diverse and driven team, each person can contribute meaningfully to the company’s success.
