What inspired you to join GIC, and how has your experience here compared to your initial expectations?
I was introduced to GIC during the GIC-MOE Economics Experience in 2019, where I was inspired by the speakers’ passion and intellect. Their depth and clarity sparked a curiosity that grew into a long-term aspiration to join the organization. Since coming on board, I have discovered that beyond its sophisticated, polished exterior, GIC is also remarkably warm and collaborative, with colleagues who generously share their time and guidance. This supportive environment has made my journey here both surprising and reassuring.
What do you do in GIC, and what aspects of your work do you enjoy and find most motivating?
As a Technology Group Graduate, I’m rotating across three teams over a 15-month programme—so far, I’ve worked in the technology arm of the Portfolio Execution Group (PEG), the Risk & Performance Management Department (RPMD), and am now with the Sustainability Office (SO). Each rotation is like stepping into a new learning playground, giving me fresh challenges and opportunities to grow.
What I enjoy most about my work at GIC is the trust placed in me. Even as a junior member, I’ve been given real ownership over my projects and the space to make meaningful contributions. That sense of empowerment is not only motivating but also deeply rewarding.
What does a typical workday look like for you?
Most days begin with coffee and a team stand-up, where we discuss our goals and align on priorities. The rest of the day is a blend of deep focus on coding, collaborating with colleagues to tackle challenges, and unwinding together over shared snacks—making even the busiest days both productive and enjoyable.
Tell us about a project or initiative you’ve worked on and your role in it
One of the highlights of my experience was automating a trading strategy. I played a hands-on role, working closely with the team to translate the strategy into code and rigorously test it in real-time scenarios. As a high-stakes initiative, it demanded meticulous attention to detail and a strong command of domain knowledge to ensure optimal execution. Witnessing its successful rollout in production was incredibly rewarding.
What new skills or knowledge have you gained during your time at GIC?
My experience here has significantly strengthened my cross-functional coordination and stakeholder management skills, while also teaching me the importance of asking thoughtful, strategic questions to drive better outcomes. Beyond enhancing my technical expertise, I’ve developed the confidence to navigate ambiguity and tackle complex situations, adapting to challenges and collaborating effectively across teams. This growth has been invaluable in expanding both my professional capabilities and personal resilience.
How would you describe your learning and development at GIC?
As part of the GIC Graduate Programme (GPP), I began with a structured bootcamp that provided a solid foundation in technical skills while also fostering connections with peers from various departments. The immersive start was instrumental in building both my technical fluency and a strong professional network. GIC’s culture of peer learning and open exploration continually encourages me to expand my knowledge and step outside my comfort zone, making my personal and professional growth both dynamic and energising.
What advice would you give to candidates looking to join GIC?
Come in with curiosity and don’t be shy—GIC is a place where people are far more approachable and supportive than you might expect. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, stay open to feedback and remember that it’s perfectly normal not to have all the answers from day one. What truly matters is your willingness to learn and adapt; with that mindset, everything else will fall into place over time.
