Senior Vice President

Portfolio Execution Group

John L.

As a Senior Vice President in the Portfolio Execution Group in the London Office, John Lilley serves as an Equity Execution Trader under the Global Trading Unit (GTU). He joined GIC in 2016 and has been a valuable member since. Together with his team, they are the primary point of contact for GIC’s Investment teams and external counterparties for all trading-related matters. John is enthusiastic about utilising technology and superior research to provide informative and impactful market intelligence to achieve optimal execution.

During his free time, he enjoys reading, playing golf, watching sports and spending time with his family.

Why did you decide to join GIC?

Working for such a significant institution provides the opportunity to acquire knowledge and experience that was previously unavailable, along with increased accountability. I believe GIC offers an unparalleled experience that will truly help me grow both personally and professionally.

What does your typical workday look like?

GTU traders facilitate the execution of equity orders on behalf of our Portfolio Managers. It is the responsibility of GTU to minimise price impact and maximize the value of each and every order. To achieve this, traders use their market knowledge and insights, while leveraging the established relationships with trusted counterparts. This approach aids both our Portfolio Managers and the trading strategies that are adopted.

As I have progressed in my career within GTU, the focus has intensified on how we can drive our business forward through the use of data and technology, to continue to provide a world-class service that aligns with GIC’s best interests.

What do you like most about working here?

Building a strong rapport with colleagues and being part of the company’s reputable position within the industry has been incredibly rewarding.  GIC has a great work culture and there is sincere recognition of the value that traders in GTU add—something I had not encountered to this degree before joining in 2016.

How would you describe the learning & development culture at GIC?

There is a reliable platform for learning and growth, provided through GIC School and departmental initiatives. Our strong partnerships with external trusted partners also grant us access to a wide range of subjects within our field that we may wish to explore in greater detail such as trading roundtables, conferences and teach-ins.

What you should know before joining GIC

For me, GIC’s reputation is perhaps a little understated and not fully appreciated until one works at or with the company. GIC provides excellent stewardship and opportunities for development and learning at the start of your journey while also offering the potential to fulfil a long and prosperous career.
